Surah Ya-Sin / Verse 23

Should I take gods besides Him, whose intercession would not help me at all if the All-Merciful willed that harm should reach me, and who could not save me?

The believing man now challenges the belief of those who worship idols. They have taken objects of worship besides God and attributed to them a role in bringing benefit, warding off harm or interceding before God. But if everything ultimately depends on the Creator's will, how could such beings influence a person's fate independently of Him?

Even if a being truly had the standing to intercede, that standing would itself be granted by God and would operate only within His permission. The Quran says that there is no intercessor except after God's permission Your Lord is God, who created the heavens and the earth in six days, then established His sovereignty over the Throne and governs all affairs. There is no intercessor except after His permission. That is God, your Lord; so worship Him. Will you not take heed?.

If God has definitively willed that a particular harm should occur, no intercession could independently overturn that decision or rescue someone against His will.

The verse does not deny the possibility of intercession authorised by God. It rejects worshipping beings imagined to possess power independently of Him.

The name “the All-Merciful” is also meaningful in this statement. God is the ultimate source of gifts and mercy, and the governance of the world cannot be separated from His will.
