Surah Ya-Sin / Verse 35

لِيَأْكُلُوا مِنْ ثَمَرِهِ وَمَا عَمِلَتْهُ أَيْدِيهِمْ ۖ أَفَلَا يَشْكُرُونَ

So that they may eat of its fruit—which their own hands did not create. Will they not then give thanks?

The gardens and flowing springs enable people to enjoy their fruit. In the interpretation followed here, however, the verse makes a point beyond the simple fact that we eat from them: God is the Creator and true source of these gifts. Human hands did not create the fruit itself.

People plant, irrigate, care for trees and harvest crops, but they did not originate the power of life or create the system through which a seed becomes a tree and a fruit.

Human effort is real and valuable. It does not, however, make people independent partners with God in the original creation and governance of what sustains them.

For this reason, the question “Will they not give thanks?” asks for more than spoken gratitude. Thankfulness involves recognising the source of our blessings, acknowledging our dependence upon our Lord and allowing that understanding to shape how we live.
