Surah Ya-Sin / Verse 6

لِتُنذِرَ قَوْمًا مَّا أُنذِرَ آبَاؤُهُمْ فَهُمْ غَافِلُونَ

So that you may warn a people whose forefathers were not warned, and so they are heedless

One of the purposes of the Prophet's mission and the Quran's revelation is now stated: to warn people who have become heedless of the consequences of their lives and choices.

The Arabic indhar means making someone aware of an approaching danger while warning them about it. The prophets' warnings are not intended merely to frighten people with punishment. They call people to recognise the truth and correct a mistaken course while an opportunity for change still remains.

In its immediate setting, the verse refers to the people among whom the Prophet Muhammad was sent. The statement that their forefathers “were not warned” does not mean that no prophet had ever been sent to any of their remote ancestors. It may refer to more recent generations living through a long period without the direct preaching of a messenger, in which divine warnings were no longer a fresh and effective presence among them.

The word ghafilun, “heedless”, is also important. Heedlessness is more than lacking a piece of information. Someone can become absorbed in work, habits and desires while rarely considering the meaning of existence, responsibility for their actions or the outcome of life. They may know much about the world yet be inattentive to what matters most for their true well-being.

The Prophet's mission is to awaken people from such heedlessness, show them a path towards what is good and draw attention to the choices shaping their future.

But hearing a warning does not mean that everyone will accept it. The following verses describe some who resist the call so persistently that guidance no longer reaches them, while others receive it and begin a different way of life. This contrast leads into the surah's discussion of faith, rejection and human responsibility.
