إِنَّا جَعَلْنَا فِي أَعْنَاقِهِمْ أَغْلَالًا فَهِيَ إِلَى الْأَذْقَانِ فَهُم مُّقْمَحُونَ
We have placed shackles around their necks, reaching up to their chins, so their heads are forced upwards
The Arabic aghlal, plural of ghull, refers to shackles placed around the neck, often binding the hands to it as well. Adhqan means “chins”, and muqmahun describes those whose heads are held up so that they cannot readily lower them.
The image is vivid. A person whose head has been forced upwards cannot easily look down towards their own feet or recognise the path ahead. Their eyes may be open, but they are prevented from seeing what is needed to find their way.
This image reveals the inner state of those who have closed themselves off from accepting the truth. They refuse to bow before guidance and persist in rejection. The outcome is the loss of the insight required to recognise the right path.
It matters that the Quran attributes the placing of these shackles to God. Read in the light of the preceding verse, however, this state should not be treated as a punishment unrelated to human choices. The passage concerns those whose continuous pursuit of error and resistance to truth has led to this result.
In this reading, the shackles are not merely a penalty standing apart from their conduct; they disclose the same rebellion and captivity that their actions have brought into their inner lives. The outward image reveals a hidden reality.
The following verse completes the picture. Here, the shackles prevent them from lowering their heads and seeing the path before them; next, barriers stand ahead and behind them. Taken together, these images show how deeply rooted defiance can deprive a person of the ability to recognise the way of guidance.
The shackles thus become more than a sign of confinement: they portray enslavement to a misguidance that the person has themselves embraced. Someone who might have found the way through accepting the truth is now bound by a condition that prevents them from seeing it.
