The picture that began with shackles around the neck is now extended. People appear trapped among barriers, with a covering over their sight. They cannot see a way forward or recognise the right direction.
The Arabic sadd means a barrier separating one thing from another. The Quran speaks of one before them and one behind them; together, these expressions represent every direction, as though the people are surrounded on all sides with no way out. Aghshaynahum means that they have been covered. Their problem is not only that something blocks their movement: they have also lost the ability to perceive the way.
Within the context of these verses, this blindness means a loss of insight into the truth and the way of guidance, not ordinary physical blindness.
Read together, the preceding verse and this one convey a deeper meaning. Shackles that hold the head up prevent a person from looking at themselves and the way beneath their feet. The surrounding barriers close off their view of what lies beyond them.
These images can be understood as pointing towards two significant avenues for recognising truth: reflecting upon our own existence and observing God's signs in the world around us.
By looking inward, we can recognise our needs, limitations and the conditions of human life. By observing the order and wonders of creation, we can perceive signs of the Creator's knowledge and power. Yet a person deeply entrenched in arrogance and denial may fail to benefit from these signs despite possessing eyes and reason. Neither looking within nor contemplating the surrounding world awakens them.
The verse warns of the dangerous outcome of persistent heedlessness and defiance. As long as a person seeks truth and remains willing to correct their course, the signs of guidance can benefit them. But someone who continuously disregards these signs may eventually reach a condition in which they can neither recognise the way nor find within themselves the readiness to return to it.
