After him, We did not send down any army from heaven against his people, nor would We have done so

The story now turns from the believing man's outcome to that of his people. They rejected the messengers' invitation and killed the believer. They then faced the consequences of their conduct, yet no army descended from heaven to destroy them.
This prepares for the following verse and shows that the destruction of the town was so easy before God's power that there was no need to send a force of angels to fight its people.
The destruction of previous communities did not depend upon such an army being deployed. In this case, a single cry was enough—an ending that the next verse portrays in startling language.
