Surah Ya-Sin / Verse 41

وَآيَةٌ لَّهُمْ أَنَّا حَمَلْنَا ذُرِّيَّتَهُمْ فِي الْفُلْكِ الْمَشْحُونِ

And a sign for them is that We carried their offspring in the ship laden with passengers and goods

After presenting signs of God in the earth, night and day, and the movements of the sun and moon, the Quran turns to the sea. A ship laden with passengers and goods can cross the water and carry people from one shore to another. This is another sign of the Creator's governance: the One who established order in the heavens also provided a natural world in which people could travel across the seas.

The words “We carried their offspring” draw particular attention to the next generation. Mentioning children can awaken tenderness and concern for the safety of those we love. A ship does not merely carry goods. It carries human lives, including children, and their vulnerability amid the dangers of the sea reminds us of our dependence on God's mercy and the order of His creation.

People build ships and learn to navigate them, but they did not create the water or the natural properties that allow ships to float. Human skill operates within a world whose underlying possibilities come from God.
