Surah Ya-Sin / Verse 56

هُمْ وَأَزْوَاجُهُمْ فِي ظِلَالٍ عَلَى الْأَرَائِكِ مُتَّكِئُونَ

They and their spouses will be reclining on couches in the shade

After describing the joy of the people of Paradise, the Quran shows another aspect of their life: together with their spouses, they recline on comfortable couches in pleasant shade. The scene expresses not only the beauty of their surroundings but also the peace of companionship.

The phrase “they and their spouses” shows that their happiness is not limited to solitary pleasure. Companionship is itself part of their reward. The spouses mentioned have been understood as believing spouses from earthly life, or as spouses provided for them in Paradise. In either case, the verse highlights shared peace and enjoyment.

The Arabic word ẓilāl means shade, while arāʾik refers to places furnished for reclining and resting, such as comfortable couches or adorned resting places. Muttakiʾūn, 'reclining', conveys ease and dignity: there is no weary labour or anxious struggle in this scene.

In our earthly experience, shade suggests shelter from heat and a chance to rest. The Quran uses this familiar image to make the blessing understandable, without reducing the reality of the Hereafter to the physical conditions of our present world.

Taken together, the verse portrays peace, dignity and welcome companionship. The people of Paradise enjoy the blessings God has prepared for them, alongside their spouses and free of the burdens of worldly life.
