Surah Ya-Sin / Verse 44

إِلَّا رَحْمَةً مِّنَّا وَمَتَاعًا إِلَىٰ حِينٍ

Except through mercy from Us, allowing them to enjoy life for a time

Following the warning about danger at sea, this verse speaks of divine mercy. When people escape drowning, their rescue also belongs within God's governance. The One who makes travel possible can likewise provide means of rescue. The reminder of God's power is completed by a reminder of His mercy.

Surviving one danger does not mean escaping death forever. In the same Titanic disaster, around 700 people survived in lifeboats and were taken to safety by the rescue ship Carpathia. Their lives continued, but escaping this disaster did not mean escaping mortality. The expression “enjoyment for a time” (mata'an ila hin) reminds us that earthly life has a limit and an appointed end. Rescue from danger offers a further opportunity to live, not a promise of endless life.

This truth brings both hope and a call to awareness. People need not despair of divine mercy in the face of danger, nor suppose that ease and safety will last forever. Every further day is a gift and an opportunity to be grateful, live well and reconsider the direction of one's life.
