وَيَقُولُونَ مَتَىٰ هَٰذَا الْوَعْدُ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ
And they say, 'When will this promise be fulfilled, if you are telling the truth?'
وَيَقُولُونَ مَتَىٰ هَٰذَا الْوَعْدُ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ
And they say, 'When will this promise be fulfilled, if you are telling the truth?'
After describing God's signs and the rejection of calls to mindfulness and generosity, the Quran presents another aspect of the deniers' response. In a mocking tone, they ask: “When will this promise be fulfilled, if you are telling the truth?”
The promise concerns the Day of Resurrection, about which the messengers warned them: the present world will end, and people will be raised to account for their actions. But their question is not a sincere attempt to understand. They reject the very idea of resurrection and use the demand for a date to ridicule the messengers' warning and cast doubt on its truth.
They assume that because the Day has not yet arrived, they can dismiss it. The following verses do not give them a date. Instead, the Quran draws attention to what they overlook: when that Day arrives, there will be no further opportunity to prepare or make amends for the past.
